Fort Teremba, a former penal colony in New Caledonia located about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Nouméa, offers a museum, a marked trail, and activities on site.
Starting in 1984, the Marguerite Association became involved in the preservation and rehabilitation of this significant historical site. In 1989, it was classified as a historical monument and purchased by the municipality of Moindou.
Today, the site provides an insight into the history of the penal colony and the 1878 Kanak uprising through its museum. The major steps in preserving the site, as well as the outdoor trail, will help you better understand the organization of this former penitentiary. Multi-games, such as an escape game, a puzzle trail, and team duels, offer you the chance, whether with family or friends, to discover the country's history in an original and fun way.
Each year, a Sound and Light show is held over two evenings, invoking and staging both major and minor moments of New Caledonian history with the help of around a hundred volunteers, to the great delight of the audience.
